Position Summary

This Director level position presents a dynamic opportunity for a portfolio manager and underwriter to play a lead role in the underwriting and portfolio management activities of Webster Bank's Healthcare Middle Market Industry group. In this position, you will be responsible for underwriting new real estate, cash flow and asset-based commercial loans for healthcare private equity, REITs, real estate developers and healthcare companies, as well as manage portfolio management activities and build portfolio customer relationships. In partnering with Relationship Managers, this position includes all facets of deal underwriting: negotiate and structure financing terms, prepare financing proposals, perform due diligence, prepare internal credit approval documents and be an influential voice in Credit Committee approval calls, organize and close transactions. Portfolio management responsibilities will involve pro-actively calling on portfolio customers, consultative cross-selling of banking services, pro-actively monitor customer performance, advise customers on credit actions related to operating performance or strategic initiatives or loan agreement requirements, completion of interim and annual portfolio reviews and problem loan reports, and process amendments, consents or waivers, and underwrite refinancing(s) and incremental credit extensions. Key Responsibilities include:

  • Support Business Unit Leader and Relationship Managers in managing customer relationships
  • Manage an assigned account portfolio, develop and maintain deep understanding of client business and industry trends, pro-actively manage and monitor client performance and credit risk profile, respond to customer credit requests, advocate appropriate credit actions to Business Unit Head and Senior Credit Officers
  • Spearhead due diligence process for new transactions and lead diligence activities, assist with preparation of pre-screen and credit approval documents for presentation to investment committee, prepare and review financial models, organize and manage deal closing process
  • Participate in joint sales calls with Business Unit Head and Relationship Managers and underwrite and close financings and credit requests for new and existing customer relationships; identify and direct cross-sell opportunities on assigned accounts
  • Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of Webster credit products and services, and the ability to form consultative relationships and propose appropriate solutions


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance; MBA a plus
  • 10+ plus years in commercial banking & finance
  • Strong commercial credit experience and formal credit training or experience in senior PM or credit executive role
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven ability to develop and cultivate and expand upon customer relationships.
  • Strong analytical skills and proficiency with financial statements.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with little supervision.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Healthcare industry experience, a big plus

The estimated salary range for this position is $165,000 USD to $175,000 USD. Actual salary may vary up or down depending on job-related factors which may include knowledge, skills, experience, and location. In addition, this position is eligible for incentive compensation.
