Risk management professional to serve as front-line unit dedicated SME on risk and compliance to support and guide Consumer Banking on best practices.  The Director on the Consumer Bank (CB) Front Line Controls (FLC) team reports to the Managing Director (MD) and supports the MD with the development and execution of the CB FLC program.  This role will be the primary point-of-contact for the oversight of compliance and risk related matters for multiple business units within Webster Bank.  As the primary point-of-contact, this colleague is expected to partner with the Front-Line Unit Business Executive (FLUE) and designees to lead and review risk & control self-assessments, risk events, risk metrics, issues (also known as control gap identification and mitigation), losses, and new activities.  The Director helps to drive a control-oriented culture across the line of business through their collaboration and partnership with colleagues in each of the lines of defense.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as dedicated subject matter expert for assigned Front Line Units (FLU).

  • Support the Managing Director of the CB FLCO team and acts as the primary point-of-contact for compliance and risk related matters for multiple business units.

  • Lead the FLUE and designees through and manage the risk & control self-assessment process.  The Director will analyze results, identify control weaknesses/gaps, and suggest actions to mitigate risk and will liaise directly with ORM on effective challenges.

  • Lead and assist FLUEs with the development and maintenance of risk metrics to monitor the risk profile of the respective FLU(s); Prepare, test, and distribute risk metric reporting on at least a quarterly basis.

  • Lead and assist business units with the identification, analysis and future mitigation of risk issues and events that may have resulted in a loss or gap in process.

  • Analyze operational loss reporting to identify themes, trends, and/or patterns. 

  • Encourage front- line self-identification of control gaps.  Partner with 2LOD to develop action plans to resolve the control gaps.

  • Monitor new activity (also known as new products and/or services) initiatives and provide appropriate review, assessment, and challenge.

  • Develop, maintain, and refresh internal CB FLC procedures, policies, and processes.

  • Manage assigned business unit(s)/lines of business(es) 3PRM, ISRA activities as required. 

  • Develop and submit risk updates and reminders for assigned business unit(s)/lines of business(es)

  • Responsible for regulatory exam preparation/coordination for the assigned FLU(s)

  • Responsible for managing and maintaining at least one CB FLC program (i.e. Issue Management, Complaint Oversight, Procedure Oversight, Risk Metric Management, NMLS Program, etc.)

  • Collaborate with FLUEs, FLCOs and 2LOD/3LOD partners across the organization to promote a controls-oriented culture.

  • Able to work on multiple projects/initiatives concurrently (e.g., committees, projects, risk reporting) to be able to understand the team’s strategic objectives and decision making for execution.

  • Understand banking regulations, supervisory expectations, and industry trends for large financial institutions, as it relates to compliance and risk management.

  • Direct and manage ad-hoc projects and/or initiatives within the CB FLC team.

  • Drive and champion heightened standards initiatives as it relates to the Consumer Bank.

  • Other responsibilities as outlined in the FLRO Addendum.

Skills/Experience/Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field, or equivalent experience, required

  • At least 5 years of Risk or Audit related experience in financial institutions

  • At least 8 years of experience within the financial services industry

  • CRCM designation desired, but not required

  • Must work well independently and in a team environment

  • Comfortable with emerging technology

  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills; Excel especially

  • Working knowledge of How 2 Work, Salesforce, ServiceNow, and Logic Manager

  • Broad knowledge of compliance and operational risk, regulatory expectations, and bank best practices

  • Excellent analytical, communication, project management, and time management skills

  • Ability to manage change and effectively influence and consistently build strong lasting working relationships with stakeholders across all levels.

This role can be based in our Waterbury, Southington, and Stamford CT locations or remote for the right candidate.

The estimated base salary range for this position is $130,000 USD to $150,000 USD.  Actual salary may vary up or down depending on job-related factors which may include knowledge, skills, experience, and location. In addition, this position is eligible for incentive compensation.
